Propeller Brewing Company Launches New Brand
Propeller Brewing Company | press release
Nova Scotia’s most successful microbrewery is set to release a new seasonal brand to NSLC.
Propeller Brewing Company is embracing and capitalizing on summer heat with the brewery’s second seasonal release at the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) Propeller Kristall Weizen. Propeller introduced the very popular Bohemian Style Pilsener to a wider market earlier this year.

The brewery is set to release 500ml bottles of Kristall Weizen to 28 NSLC stores this week. This summer seasonal is a filtered Weissbier. Don Harms (brewmaster at Propeller) explains “The banana and phenolic (clove) characteristics are more subtle in this filtered version, than in its unfiltered counterpart Propeller Hefeweizen.” The style is common in Europe, many producers include both Hefe (unfiltered) and Kristall (filtered) Weizens in their repertoires.
The rotating seasonal listing is already proving successful for Propeller with many NSLC stores selling out of Pilsener as fast as they get it on the shelves. “As well as giving more people an opportunity to try brands that have until now have only been available at the Gottingen St. brewery, it gives us a chance to experiment with new styles and test the market” Says Andrew Cooper , Sales and Marketing Manager at Propeller. “We’re really exited about this.” Consumers can expect a new seasonal product from Nova Scotia’s original microbrewery about every three months. Some of these will be old favorites like Pumpkin Ale, others will be entirely new styles that Nova Scotians have not seen in our market before.

Propeller Brewing Company Expands
Propeller Brewing Company | press release
Nova Scotia’s most successful microbrewery is adding capacity in anticipation of new brew.
Propeller Brewing Company is expanding its capacity with the purchase of a new 6000 liter fermenter thanks in part to the exceptional demand for Hefeweizen, Propeller’s seasonal wheat beer first produced last summer.
The brewery is set to release six-packs of Hefeweizen to the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) on May 1. This product was originally a limited, seasonal release last summer: demand proved so high production continued throughout winter months.
“Customer response has been very positive at our retail store, as well as the private liquor stores in Halifax, so we’re expecting big things from this beer at the NSLC,” says Andrew Cooper, Sales and Marketing Manager at Nova Scotia’s original microbrewery. “It is an unusual beer style for North America and we are delighted people like its unique, refreshing taste.
The new fermenter, and a new keg washing system are expected to arrive this week. Not a moment too soon. Unexpected growth in its beer sales over the usually slower winter months is putting pressure on Propeller Brewing Co to ramp up production early for summer.
Cooper says, “We’ve seen high demand already at our cold beer store, where weekend sales hit a record high. He added that while the unseasonably warm weather played its part in record sales, Propeller’s growth has never slowed. Over the past three years the brewery has added 6 fermenters totaling 27000 liters of production capacity, (every three weeks) as well as upgraded packaging equipment.
“We budgeted for a 4 per cent increase this year,” says John Allen, President of Propeller. “Instead we are running at 20 per cent. After 13 years in operation I expected our growth to settle, but that hasn’t happened.” Allen attributes Propeller’s sustained upward trend to three principles the company holds strongly. “We focus on excellence in every beer,” says Allen, “We listen carefully to our customers who know exactly what good beer is, and we run our finances with the same prudence you would your household finances. I think that’s a good formula that’s common among successful Canadian small businesses.”

Nova Scotia Joins The Propeller Revolution.
Propeller Brewing Company | press release
December brings the last days of autumn and the first days of winter. Along with cold Nova Scotia nights, the change of season brings with it Propeller Brewing Company's winter seasonal; Revolution (Russian Imperial Stout). In past years this seasonal offering has won the hearts of serious beer enthusiasts from Nova Scotia and elsewhere.
Propeller brews this unique ale true to its traditional roots; in the 18th century the English sent their brews via the Baltic Sea to the court of the Czars. To reduce the risk of spoilage Russian Imperial Stout was brewed to very high gravities and allowed to ferment on the long voyage. The result? A dark, strong and bracing brew. Propeller's version weighs in at a whopping eight percent alcohol content, with a deep, rich, black colour. The taste of alcohol is well masked by the intense hop bitterness, extreme roasted malt and dark fruit notes.
Propeller Brewing Company has brewed and bottled this unfiltered ale each year since 2006, making Propeller the extreme brewing pioneers of Nova Scotia. This seasonal offering is only available at the Propeller Cold Beer Store on Gottingen Street, and select private retailers in Halifax.

Fall in Nova Scotia is marked by the arrival of Propeller Pumpkin Ale.
Propeller Brewing Company | press release

September brings the last days of summer and the first days of fall. Nova Scotians mark their calendars accordingly, since this change of season brings with it Propeller Brewing Company's fall seasonal Pumpkin Ale. Propeller Brewing Company has brewed its largest ever batch of Pumpkin Ale this week. This year, the Halifax micro brewery will hand craft 75 hectolitres of the all-natural ale. That's the equivalent of almost 3750 6-packs of pumpkin-y goodness. This seasonal offering is only available at the Propeller Cold Beer Store on Gottingen Street, select private retailers and a few pubs or restaurants in Halifax.
Propeller brews this unique ale using Howard Dill's® world famous Atlantic Giant Pumpkins® with a special selection of spices. That's in addition to the usual ingredients: highest quality malted grain, hops, water and yeast. It takes big pumpkins to make big beer.
As for flavour, Propeller Brew Master Don Harms, says "It's simple. It smells like pumpkin and tastes like beer- people like that. It sells out every year; we're hoping to make it to Halloween."
Propeller has brewed seasonal beers that have become year-round offerings, such as the gold medal winning IPA and the Bohemian Style Pilsener, but this brew will remain a limited-offering only. "It's success is dependent on the season. Pumpkin Ale captures the spirit of the harvest season,"says John Allen, President and Founder of Propeller Brewing Company.

Propeller spins off in mild, refreshing new direction
By SEAN WOOD Wood On Wine
PROPELLER, the now well-established Halifax craft brewery, has gradually added interesting new brews to its range. The beers are all made to exacting standards and some have been world-class standouts. Propeller's founder, John Allen, was originally inspired to make top-quality English-style beers but has recently begun to diversify. The latest is a German-style Hefeweizen. "Hefe" means yeast, "weizen" means wheat. READ on?

Growlers filled with wheat
by Andy Murdoch
Propeller's new wheat beer, Hefeweizen, available on tap in their store Monday. Bottled beer to follow shortly. Note: It's good.
Don Harms, brewmaster for Propeller, pours bottles of Propeller's new wheat beer, Hefeweizen*, into glasses. He places them on the bar. Daniel Girard, Garrison Brewer, puts his nose right up to the sudsy glass and takes a huff. Banana and cloves, that's good. Lorne Romano, Rogue's Roost brewer, takes his glass over to a window and holds it up to the light.
Then they drink. Pleasure drifts across their faces in long draughts. It's good. Read More

House beers
Local brewies often prepare one-off blends of beers for bars and restaurants around town. They are worth searching out.
by Andy MurdochFor the diehard beer hunter always looking for a new taste, there is a decent selection of blended house beers poured out in bars and restaurants across the city.
Propeller currently has the most specialty blends on tap in and out of the city. "It's not practical to do a single batch of beer for a place, so we do blends of existing beers," says John Allen, owner of Propeller Brewery on Gottingen. "It's difficult and challenging from a production point of view, but we like doing it."
There's the amber Opa at Opa (1565 Argyle), Brooklyn Dark at the Brooklyn Warehouse (2795 Windsor), Menz Pale Ale at the Menz bar (2182 Gottingen), the Knot Ale in Lunenburg's Knot Pub, the Kilted Frenchman (Bayport, South Shore) and the amber Horsepower is their biggest seller at The Seahorse (1665 Argyle).

Take your pils
Propeller just launched Atlantic Canada's first bottled premium lager.
by Craig Pinhey
Last week, Halifax's first modern-era microbrewery unveiled Propeller Pilsener, its latest in a recent slew of new brands aimed at serious beer lovers.
Bottled with the iconic ship's propeller on a blue background, Propeller Pilsener is the brainchild of head brewer Don Harms.
"Don is a Pilsener aficionado," explains John Allen, owner of the Propeller Brewing Company on Gottingen. This is the first bottled premium lager to be produced in Atlantic Canada, although some might argue with that claim. It is not Propeller's claim it is mine. READ more?
